Next Up in Our Employee Spotlight Series: Meet Jacob Chu

Great work starts with great people. At Bradley Concrete, our Employee Spotlight Series highlights the talent, experience, and perspectives that help drive our projects and teams forward.

Meet Jacob Chu, Estimator. With experience across construction and design, Jacob brings a well-rounded perspective to estimating and a natural ability to connect with people. Learn how his diverse background shapes his approach to the work and contributes to Bradley’s continued success.

Your experience spans both construction and design. How has that journey shaped your path to estimating?

I got my start in construction while interning for a contractor during my undergraduate studies at Santa Clara University. After graduation, I was torn between design and construction, but I ultimately chose design to pursue my professional engineer’s license. After nearly a decade in design, I found my way back to construction, bringing that experience with me. Today, that background continues to shape how I approach my work and has become a valuable part of what I bring to the team.

Cross-industry experience is helpful. Speaking of your work, can you touch on a project you’re currently working on?

The life of an estimator – especially at a subcontractor like Bradley – typically means I’m bidding two to three jobs a week. If you’re with a general contractor, you can stay on one project for a few years. Recently, I bid on a few ground-up jobs in the education, industrial, and healthcare sectors.

Your 9-year work anniversary was at the beginning of this year. How have you grown in your career since you started?

I started here as a Senior Project Engineer before transitioning into a hybrid Project Manager-Estimator role. I stayed in that position until the COVID-19 pandemic, when I stepped away from the company to spend more time supporting my family. When I returned, I shifted my focus fully to estimating. That earlier experience continues to shape how I approach my work today because I’ve had the opportunity to see the full project lifecycle, from bidding and winning work to managing construction through completion.

What’s one word your team would use to describe you?

Curious. I like to ask a lot of questions and try to understand the “how” and the “why” of the way that something works. I also try to read whenever possible, both in my personal and professional life. If I’m not reading about construction, I’m reading about sports, history or real estate investing.

That’s exciting! Outside of reading, what else do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I’m active in sports, both individually and with my family. In my free time, I enjoy playing basketball, softball, golf, and baseball. I have three sons and I’ve coached their basketball and little league baseball teams for several years now. I’m also a board member of their little league, and it’s a really nice way to give back to the community that’s given us so much.
